Our final day starts back in York proper with brunch by the city walls in a hipster hotspot of speciality coffee. An independent restaurant-come-art space, we fear we are out of luck for a table when we arrive but we are squeezed in our back under the canopy of a heated gazebo that is fitted out with fairly lights and canvas prints to add an allure that makes it more welcoming than one might imagine. 

A superb vegan shakshouka, with a rich, tomatoey base, couples perfectly with the honey-nut aura of a latte of Monmouth coffee beans that is rich and smooth, firing me up for the day ahead. I almost don’t want to leave the neo-Victorian rooms that have a gentle hum of activity to them and I’m tempted to take a cake or other sweet treat with me as we slide past the front counter once again but bite my tongue and hold my wallet.
