47 London Wall, London EC2M 5TE Reclaimed church pews and second hand furniture allow me to worship at the altar of my own addictions as I sup, not of holy water and wine, but coffee of the highest order as I wait to indulge myself in the sin of gluttony. Along London Wall, a few paces from one of my favourite pubs, is a small, ramshackle room filled with the aforementioned accoutrements and an array of baked goods sitting by the window but the prize I am after sits in a cardboard box by the till. Forged in the bowels of a bakery in New York, the Cronut is a truly American creation which takes the rich, flaky pastry of a croissant and fills it with cream before deep frying it and topping it with icing in the manner of a doughnut to create an ostentatious food portmanteau that probably contains enough calories to power a small village in East Sussex. Officially 'Cronut' is trademarked but it has found its way into a select few coffee shops and bakeries in London under various guises, here it is called the 'Cro-doughnut'. Unimaginative but it gets the point across. Having traversed the length and breadth of the capital to hunt down this elusive pastry, the coffee shop I eventually find it in quickly cements itself as a firm favourite of mine due to its excellent coffee blend (from local maestros 'Monmouth Coffee') and its quirky nature.
