60 Seymour St, Mayfair, London W1H 7JN Despite an abundance of love for London, I have a real issue with the area West of Marble Arch. I’m not entirely sure why but I sort of see it as a bland playground for the rich, the famed structure itself disappointingly small and grubby just aloofly standing outside an underground station like it were put there as an afterthought and everything else just boringly nondescript on the exterior whilst supposedly containing a multitude gold and baubles for those who who can afford to see the other side or it all. I wouldn’t know. I’ve had reason to trip up here on a couple occasions as of late and both times I’ve been rather underwhelmed by the lack of anything definingly intriguing enough to catch my attention whilst waiting for my appointments. This second time, the pouring rain adds to the atmosphere of cloying, grey despondency that assaults me upon exit from the tube but I have a ray of hope, a sliver of joy in a haven from this wealth of mediocrity and mediocrity of wealth in a coffee shop I managed to discover on my last foray into the region. Set back from the main thoroughfares, I have to walk past a vast, Starbucks with ominous black decor and a vastness that stretches back in an imposing manner. I’ve had need to use the facilities in there once or twice but now I have found somewhere else, the relief is palpable. The Borough Barista stakes its claim to a corner spot where tables surround its windows on one street another but every time I’ve ventured by the weather has not been permitting. Chic on the inside, always rate a place that has stacks of Caffeine magazine at the ready as though they know this is somewhere that customers come for gourmet brews and have the discerning taste to know enough that they might want to read more about advancements and the industry trends. The trick, however, is being welcoming enough to those who don’t know a lot but still want to sample some fine coffee. Roasting their own beans and baking their own cookies, the unique products play well with the chill vibe and oat and soya milk options are also on offer for non-dairy drinkers. I take a seat by the window and start perusing the latest issue of the aforementioned publication whilst waiting for my coffee to be brought over, occasionally glancing out into the grim surroundings beyond the borders of this particular stop. Thank God I’ve found this place or I’d likely never come out this way again except for this saviour of good taste and great coffee.
