It would be misleading to say there’s no where to get a coffee in Greenwich as there are a few of spots about but what is a smattering of decent options ebbs and flows every now and then to really put the boot in when deciding where to go.
Just up the road in Deptford, the pool is fairly large of good independents and perhaps they tend to get drawn into this hipster cross section of not-quite-gentrified rents but with enough students and first time buyers as a stable-ish customer base rather than gravitate towards very posh, very expensive Greenwich.
Of course, Greenwich has the usual handful of national and international chains, as well as fast-growing yuppie brunch spot ‘Grind’ that is now ubiquitous in any London borough with money and did start out as a coffee shop.
With the infamous Reddoor now gone though, a spot that was loved and loathed in equal measure for its higgledy-piggledy furniture, worn out LP player stuttering out whatever the staff felt like and laid back approach to service. It was not a place that those used to uniformity or a more  efficient sense of customer service would have thrived whilst others enjoyed the relaxed chaos and rough edges that made it the polar opposite of any multi-national, caffeine peddling, tax dodging giant but it is no surprise that it has finally given way to market forces and moved on. In fact, the surprise is perhaps that it lasted so long in the first place.
So now, you are sort of left with the Allpress coffee stall that rocks up at the market on certain days of the week, or the Doughnut shop that serves Caravan coffee to wash down your iced confection. Fortunately, 15 Grams Coffee House has stepped in to stop Greenwich from easing ever closer to becoming a caffeine desert with its cunning corner position that places it both on the main road and within the confines of the market.
A tiny hub of a coffee counter on one side and a bar at the other to drink at, leaving a narrow strip to navigate through and order from. What it lacks in size, however, it makes up for in quality and character. Serving its own blend of beans that it roasts in small batches, it focuses on creating a positive impact with its wares buying at a minimum of 25x the fair trade price.
Managing to struggle out an order through a face mask and the plastic barrier presently in place for staff and customer protection, I take my drink and sit on one of the sparse tables dotted outside in order to maximise on the limited seating. A clean, bright and sweet flavour comes through my oat latte as I sit and watch those milling to-and-fro past the food stalls of the covered market. Despite its small stature, it serves up one damn fine coffee and a sense of satisfaction that you can while away the time spying on the throngs of people who pass through the Royal Borough. Although I have no connection to it from my uni days here, like I did with the now defunct Reddoor, it provides a warm feeling to observe the nostalgia from even if it isn’t directly a part of it and I hope it can last for many more years to create for students what I once had with other establishments.
