Mudlarks Garden Cafe

In coffee we seek out not only the early morning perk of a caffeinated pick me up but also a jolt of spiritual awakening, a makeshift remedy to the enervated ennui that the day to day fills us with. Fair trade, direct trade, ethically sourced, organic etc. has made conscientious consumers of us all because the karmic reparations make it taste that little bit better.
Mudlarks Garden Cafe takes this to the nth degree not only by serving fair-trade “Freedom Blend” coffee from Hemel Hempstead based Smith’s coffee company but also because of how the food is sourced and where from.

Mudlarks Garden itself is a Hertford based charity supporting adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues. With its own allotment the charity aims to integrate people with learning difficulties into the community. This allotment then serves the cafe to provide its entirely vegetarian menu meaning that, wherever possible, the food is locally sourced whilst the cafe provides paid work and training for adults with learning disabilities.
For those wanting to keep their carbon footprint down whilst eating out, this provides an ideal alternative to many other options whilst the higgledy piggledy nature of the mismatched furniture and decor lends an air of chaotic coziness.
The coffee lacks any sort of bitterness, pitching itself in that sort of middle-ground that many more commercial roasts do, making sure it’s not too sweet either. This means it is optimised to taking it with milk, should you favour a creamy, mild coffee but those who take it black may be surprised at just how strong it can be. Either way, pair it with an additive free cake or pastry (often with vegan or gluten free options available) and your set for the day.
