Vegan Pranakhon, Bangkok - Thailand

139 Thanon Tanao, Khwaeng Wat Bowon Niwet, Khet Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

Thailand does a lovely line in iced coffee, famous for their afe yen, which is strong coffee mixed with condensed milk and served over ice with a layer of evaporated milk on top.

A sort of beverage come dessert, it’s a dairy filled treat that has come to typify Thai coffee culture that feels like an impossibility for a vegan to try. So, discovering  Vegan Pranakhon, just off the infamous Khaosan Road, feels like somewhat of a revelation.

An upmarket vegan restaurant that does trade in upmarket versions of classic Thai dishes with a vegan twist, I was over the moon to discover they did a version of Thai iced coffee I could try.

Normally I’d avoid reviewing restaurants and just stick to speciality cafes but this opportunity was too good to pass up and it really was a coffee worth putting pen to paper about. An intense, dark roast that has an earthy, smoke filled taste that is immediately lifted by the saturated sweetness of condensed milk, the sweet and the bitter combine in an awesome mixture that leaves your tongue tingling with the juxtaposition it has to deal with. Definitely one for the sweet-toothed, it’s well worth seeking out if you’re plant based and want to try this part of Thai culture.
